The fundamentals of the company came when the Japanese company Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) began as The Aircraft Research Laboratory in 1917. Nakajima Chikuhei led the development and in 1932 became the key figure, changing the company name to the Nakajima Aircraft Company. With the onset of World War II the focus of production was in the aircraft and after the war became the Fuji Sangyo Co. Ltd. set on the Fuji Rabbit scooter production of aircraft parts using machinery. The company diversified later after separating into several different businesses including Fuji Jidosha specializing in the construction of buses, Omiya Fuji Kogyo made engines, scooters built by Fuji Kogyo and chassis makers Utsunomiya Sharyo later joined forces with Tokyo Fuji Dangyo trading corporation.
The emphasis is on making automobile and the development was pushed by Kenji Kita, the CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries, which grew from the merger of Utsunomiya and Tokyo Fuji Sharyo Dangyo. The name "Subaru" was chosen to produce branch and the car takes its name from the Japanese word for the Pleiades star cluster, contained in its current logo. The first car that was designed under the name was the Subaru 1500 and thus began a worldwide demand for the brand. Models such as the Sambar, the Rex, the Lion, the Impreza, Tribeca and were released Exiga in the consumer and the Subaru vehicle has been a mainstay ever since.
Several of their models have made their way in racing with the Impreza WRX and WRX STI ahead with rally success in sport, with riders such as Colin McRae won the World Rally Championship in their vehicles.
Subaru have always sold their cars in a creative and insist that their designs offer "common sense" that establish their models, apart from other competitors. Despite facing some setbacks as a result of the global economic crisis, the Japanese manufacturer is looking to a future brighter and launch its new FT-86 prototype car in 2011.
