What are the different ways to store energy besides using rechargeable batteries
Humans have been looking for a good way store energy for long. One of the main things that has been holding up electric cars is battery technology – when you compare href = "http://www.exceldigital.org.uk/cordless-drill-batteries.html"> batteries to gasoline, the differences are enormous. For example, a typical electric car could lead to 1,000 pounds (454 kg) of lead-acid batteries. These batteries take several hours to recharge, and could give the car a range of 100 miles (160-km). Two or three gallons of gasoline to the same range, weighs less than 30 pounds (13 kg), and can pump more than gasoline in about a minute.
Here is a list of other technologies that people commonly use to store energy. Some of them work in an electric car, while others are best for applications:
- One of the oldest techniques people have used is the falling weight. You lift the weight to store energy in it and then dropped the weight to extract the energy. Many grandfather clocks and cuckoo clocks use this technique. Through the implementation of the rope tied to the weights through a gear train, you can use a heavy weight and dropped it for a long period of time. This approach does not work very well in an electric car, but it worked While the clocks for hundreds of years.
- Many power plants use the "drop weight" approach in the form of water. Water is pumped up into a lake at night when the plant has excess capacity. During periods of high demand during the day, the water runs through a turbine on its way downhill to a lake bottom.

Plants absorb sunlight and convert it into carbohydrates during million years, these carbohydrates can be converted to oil or coal. On a more human time scale, we burn wood (which is a carbohydrate) to release the stored energy, or turn corn into alcohol and alcohol burn.
- Another technique that nature uses to store energy is fat, that many of us are familiar with in a personal way. It is interesting to think about a car that somehow eats grass or some other carbohydrate and stores it as fat!
- You can take the energy and split water into its hydrogen and oxygen atoms through electrolysis. When storing hydrogen and oxygen in the tanks, then you can generate energy by burning, or (more efficient) running through a fuel cell.
- You can use the energy to spin a flywheel and then extract energy by using the flywheel to run a generator. This patent has a lot of information.
- You can store the heat directly and then convert the heat to another form of energy as electricity. This page describes some of the NASA experiments in this field.

- One of the new technologies that can be offered passes the antimatter. When combined normal matter with antimatter, you get energy. You can store energy by creating antimatter. This page talks about a bit.

At this point, none of these techniques can hold a candle (another form of stored energy!) to gasoline in the sense of convenience. The methanol fuel cells seem to be the competitor close at the moment, and probably available to the general public for years to come.
