Airlines boost for Island Tourism plans
At one point in the U.S., many airlines are cutting capacity to destinations in China Continental, the companies plan to increase flights to Hawaii.
In recent months, half a dozen airlines serving Hawaii have announced it is adding about 60 scheduled flights per week to the islands, some of the markets as far away as Charlotte, North Carolina, and Detroit.
By A recent study by the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, the nation's aviation industry plans to add more than 497 000 passenger seats to Hawaii 2010. The additional capacity represents about a month's worth of airline capacity, said CEO John Monahan, HVCB.
The increase is good news for local tourism industry, which saw a decline of 15 percent of capacity after last year's double stops of Aloha Airlines and ATA Airlines, the financial crisis and rising global fuel prices.
"The amount of the new service started this year or that has been announced for next year is huge," said State Tourism Liaison Marsha Wienert.
"It says that airlines have confidence in Hawaii as a destination."
Hawaiian Airlines is adding more capacity with the delivery of its new long-range Airbus A330-200 in April.
the state's largest airline plans to add 21 flights weekly, including daily flights to Maui from Oakland, California and San Diego, and a daily flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu.
The new Airbus jets are part the local company's plan to spend as much as 4.4 billion U.S. dollars over 15 years to buy up to 24 long-haul aircraft.

Alaska Airlines, which began daily flights to Hawaii two years ago, said he plans to add 14 weekly flights to the islands of California, Hawaii, making one of the largest markets for the airline. David Carey, CEO of Outrigger Enterprises Inc., estimates that air capacity overall is still out of about 5.5 percent from its pre-Aloha and ATA days. However, he said that it is much better than other continental markets where companies carriers have reduced up to 20-30 percent.
"We're still several percentage points yet but anything that shows positive growth going forward is good news, "he said.
BAD NEWS WAS ONLY
The increased passenger elevator represents a sharp reversal from early 2008 when the Hawaii travel industry was struggling to persuade companies of the continent to help fill the void created by the closures of Aloha and ATA.
Many companies are reluctant to increase capacity due to rising fuel prices and the global economic crisis.
Moreover, some companies east as Korean Air Lines had planned to expand service to Hawaii, but then reconsidered after bookings tail off as a result of fears of H1N1.
"It was one thing after another. First you get hit with consequences for the airlines, then, was the jump in prices oil, then get hit by the financial crisis and fears H1N1, "said Uchiyama.
