Sydney Morning Herald A QANTAS air electrical failure near Bangkok on Monday is set to apply a worldwide alert to Boeing 747 operators after the problem goes back to a drip tray cracked under the first class cuisine. Qantas yesterday began a fleet-wide check of its other jumbo jets after the aircraft was forced to land on Monday with battery backup due to leakage of water from the tray short of a generator control unit. The problem beaten the aircraft, flying from London with 344 passengers, about 15 minutes from Bangkok, killing the passenger cabin lights, but leaving the essential functions operating in the cabin. In the case total power failure, where all generators fail, APU does not come online, and the pilots did not conserve energy and completely drain the main batteries down … engines continue to run (FADEC systems even have permanent full individual and separate alternators to operate HFCU), hydraulic controls continue to operate etc. .. basically the plane will fly normally. instrumentation is limited in the cockpit, but the regs require a third attitude indicator powered by an independent system for that reason. Expected Pitot / static bypass Air Data Computer and basically you’re flying a big C-152 at that point instrumentation intelligent. What does this mean? Probably want to find the right time and make a visual approach and landing. It will be dark in the back but so what, there is not even one reason to consider a distance “ditching”!
