The idea of flying has fired the imagination of mankind for centuries or even millennia. The first man-made flying objects were not aircraft, but the comets, kite flying records date back as early balloons to 200 a. C. in China, and rudimentary air were designed for the same period. Leonardo da Vinci designed several aircraft famous in the fifteenth century, but never tried to build or fly them.

All aircraft that were shown to work until the mid eighteenth and nineteenth century were lighter than the air, a significant difference with the heavier than air aircraft that would be developed in the twentieth century. Important mechanisms that would later be used to propel and control aircraft developed during this period, even if the general design were flawed and unsuccessful.

In the late nineteenth century, the idea of flying had captured the attention of the world, and many aviation pioneers built planes that managed to become the air, even if only for a second or two, preceding famous flight of the Wright brothers as much as 30 years. Several pioneers were working in both lighter than air and heavier-than-air aircraft simultaneously using hundreds of imaginative designs with varying degrees of success. Gustave Whitehead, for example, reportedly flew his engine-powered, heavier than air Design for a distance of 800 meters to 15 meters high and in 1901 or 1902, former famous flight of the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk in more than two years. Other inventors also claimed to have achieved flight between 1900 and 1910. In the twentieth century, advances in both engine technology and understanding of powered flight aerodynamics of fact, controllable possible.

The Wright brothers began working with planners and other methods of gliding at the turn of the century, and are widely recognized for the first sustained, controlled, powered flight of a heavier than air driven by a pilot, the performance of this feat near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903. In 1905, his designs of aircraft can be flown by more than 40 minutes or 30 miles in one flight. The development of airplanes grew exponentially in response to War World, during which time airplanes were used for military flights, including both reconnaissance and close-ups in the world of combat.

Development jet engine began in the 1930s, mainly in Germany and England. Both countries have aircraft work at the end of World War II. After of war, the aircraft industry turned to the civilian market, considered the beginning of what became known as the jet age. The commercial aircraft first passenger planes were put into service in the late 1940s. Regular jet service was available by the advent of mid-1950, in the era of mass commercial air travel.

At the beginning of 1960, the aircraft is no longer limited to the initial and final flight on the ground, as the first space flight was possible and the space race began. Russian Sputnik 1, launched in 1957, began a new era of flight, culminating in the first manned moon landing in 1969.
