Does Australia have modern SAM missile batteries?
IM assuming they would be used to deter enemy ships/aircraft from attempting to land in the north.
We have a modest anti-aircraft capability – two RBS-70 batteries based in South Australia (not counting HQ and support batteries, which may or may not have missiles themselves). The newer variants used are certainly modern enough, but they’re short-range and not in large numbers.
The 16th Air Defence Regiment is subordinate to Land Command rather than any of the brigade commands – they’re controlled from the top and sent where they’re needed. They may be used to defend from enemy aircraft in the north when things get dicey, but at the moment their more recent deployments have included ship-based air defence during the Gulf Wars and infantry-type roles in East Timor.
