Why CDS between the APU electrical generator mounted on electric buses and airplanes?
A plane has mounted electrical generators engines. These generators produce alternating current. Before this current is fed into the aircraft electrical bus has to go through a constant speed drive (CSD) to stabilize the current. (APU = Auxiliary Power Unit)
The engines, by necessity, must operate over a wide range of rotor RPM, and RPM, in the absence of a CDS or as they are called now, IDG (Integrated Drive Generator), then the frequency would be all over the place. In this case, AC motors could accelerate and brake with the AC frequency, the electronics would go crazy, etc CSD retains the right frequency of 400 Hz that makes the components of the system happy. An APU by contrast, can be designed to operate at a constant speed, so that the generator can be designed to 400 Hz, or whatever, at that constant speed. The only trick is to make the control of the APU fuel to keep running at a constant speed.
