I recently invited my daughter to visit her and her family in Las Vegas and look at her husband at work. Well .. Las Vegas, who can say no to that invitation. Under normal circumstances it would have been enough. But this visit!
You see my son-in-law Steve goes by another name-Dallas. Steve Major Steve Horton is the pilot # 4 slots for the United States Air Force flight demonstration team, The Thunderbirds.
The occasion was the adoption program, the first show of the season, but open to friends and family only the total equipment and several top generals with pencil and paper taking notes at every turn. Approximately 1000 has the honor of seeing the new 2006 team do their things in their home in the Nellis Air Force Base under overcast skies. The crowd is so small compared to a sample normal than 200,000 attendees that feels like a private audience with the Pope. The largest crowd ever was in Coney Island on July 4, 1987 to a mere 2.25 million watched in awe that day.
And if that was not enough the next night was the annual season of dinner-show kickoff, at least in part, celebrates the end of a training program exhausting. This year the dinner was held at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in beautiful downtown Las Vegas.
That gave me the opportunity to meet some of the new team members up close and personal, including LTC Kevin Robbins Commander / Chief, also known as the boss, MAJ Ed Casey, opposing solo, CPT Nichole Malachowski also FiFi known as Right Wing, and CPT Tad Clark, Narrator. FiFi is the first female Thunderbird flying team member-a tribute to his skill as a pilot was the subject of a Latin Good Morning "The story of that morning.
As you can imagine this elite group of 6 steering wheels, 6 other officers and a support team of 135 leading young men and women are simply the best in the world. All that talent, energy, dedication, teamwork, pride in what they do and how "I do feel very honored to be in his presence, but very proud American.
In short the mission of Thunderbird is mainly to support the recruitment and retention programs and as you can imagine the public relations. The team probably spends as much time to meet and greet as they do flying. This is a public-relations machine, not a bad machine that.
The Thunderbirds have a very demanding schedule that runs from March to November each year from 1965 to 1975 generally shows more than 30 states.
